bGS: What is the current focus of your company's business?
PeopleCube: PeopleCube provides intelligent on-demand workplace, energy, and resource management solutions that help customers run envir onmentally friendly, cost-effective operations. Through its corporate headquarters in Framingham, Massachusetts, and offices throughout the world, PeopleCube supports 7,500 customers in small, medium, and large enterprises.

bGS:
What products or services do you provide that are 'Green' and in what way do they help the environment or prevent harm?
PeopleCube: PeopleCube's flagship product, Resource Scheduler, helps organizations generate carbon-emissions savings through reductions in real estate; power for heating, cooling, lighting, and equipment; and commuting. Resource Scheduler makes it easier to schedule conference rooms, equipment, assets, and shared workspace. Its alternative workspace capabilities enable companies to cost-effectively support innovative flexible work programs.

bGS: What categories would you say your products or services encompass? Please delete those that do not apply, and leave the ones that do apply.
PeopleCube:
  • Energy conservation
  • Waste/toxin reduction
  • Effective use of organizations' workspaces
  • Real estate
  • Equipment, and other resources
bGS: What scale and development stage are your products at? ie in research, lab evaluation, production If in production, approximately how many units are in service, or how do you measure your current scale?
PeopleCube: PeopleCube's products have been fielded and are in use at thousands of organizations around the world. Among these are many companies that use Resource Scheduler specifically to manage their flexible workspaces so that they may facilitate a teleworkforce.

bGS: Would you say your company is involved in:
PeopleCube: product innovation: Provide software solutions to business enterprises

bGS: What have been your company's contributions to the field, or how do you help your clients be 'green'?
PeopleCube: PeopleCube's intelligent on-demand workplace, resource, and energy management solutions offer practical, less-expensive ways for companies to move the green agenda forward. Some examples of how Resource Scheduler helps organizations run more cost-effective, environmentally sensitive facilities include:
  • Reducing commuting needs through 'office hoteling', the practice of employees' using workspace as needed rather than having permanent, assigned spaces
  • Facilitating videoconferencing to reduce travel-related emissions
  • T racking and managing an organization's carbon footprint
  • Reusing and better utilizing resources
  • Conserving energy consumption through HVAC regulation
  • upporting the purchase of local produce
  • Reducing paper waste
Recently PeopleCube has partnered with two firms (the UK's Building Sustainability Limited and Proliphix) to bring to market complete energy-management solutions. The large-scale solutions work for enterprises with building management systems. The small-scale solutions allow even the 78 percent of companies (mostly small to mid-sized) that do not have such a system in place to inexpensively manage climate control workspaces based on occupancy, thereby helping to reduce soaring energy costs and their carbon footprint

bGS: What size do you estimate your total market, and your current share of that market?
PeopleCube: IDC estimates that, by the end of 2009, there will be 878 million mobile workers worldwide; in the US, more than 70 percent of the total nationwide workforce is expected to be made up of mobile workers. PeopleCube's Resource Scheduler enables those organizations to manage their mobile workers and flexible workspace.

bGS: Do you have any research papers or internal metrics that measure the environmental impact of your products/services? Can you provide links or copies?
PeopleCube: Whitepapers on "Office Hoteling," "Going Green," and "What's the ROI of efficient workplace management?" are available at PeopleCube's web site.

bGS: What are the biggest challenges in your field?
PeopleCube: Very often, companies are unaware of the problems they have when it comes to real-estate management. They know they have the space they need, but they don't realize how inefficiently it is being used. So the challenge is to make them aware of the "what" (the problem) before introducing the "how" (the solution). In other words, companies can't manage what they don't measure.

bGS: The greatest opportunities?
PeopleCube: Businesses are realizing that 'going green' is not only good for the environment, it's a smart business practice with the potential for significant cost savings. However, many touted environmental endeavors, such as creating green buildings or harnessing the power of wind and solar power to address energy consumption, can be very costly and require a major commitment of time and resources. Since PeopleCube's intelligent on-demand workplace, resource, and energy management solutions offer less expensive ways for companies to move the green agenda forward, a wide variety of enterprises across virtually all industries can potentially benefit. That means there's a large pool of organizations who are potential PeopleCube customers.

bGS: Are you interested in collaborations with other companies or individuals, and if so in what areas?
PeopleCube: PeopleCube partners with a number of different companies. One example is the integration of Resource Scheduler with Building Sustainability's Footprint Tracker energy consumption and carbon emissions tracking application. This unique solution enables companies to monitor and reduce energy consumption based on efficient scheduling and utilization of workspace and energy resources, resulting in lower costs for energy (e.g., heating and lighting) and reduced carbon emissions. By integrating Resource Scheduler with Steelcase Inc.'s RoomWizard, PeopleCube provides organizations with the flexibility to use their rooms as users want to use them, while providing administrators useful information based on real usage data through integrated reports. With actual data, administrators can make informed decisions on future space requirements.

bGS: What advice would you offer to individuals or companies interested in the environment? Ie what is needed, how to get involved (either thru work or as a consumer) and how to focus effort the most effectively to help the environment?
PeopleCube: PeopleCube's ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship is driven by an initiative that focuses on five simple tenets:
G – Generate environmental awareness
R – Recycle as much as possible
E – Eliminate unnecessary waste
E – Energy conservation
N – Now is the time

PeopleCube has adopted responsible practices regarding the environmental impacts of its corporate activities. It continually reviews objectives and targets for achieving its goal to protect the global environment.
