bGS: What is the current focus of your company's business?
Accellion: Accellion is a premier provider of managed file transfer solutions that enable business users to quickly, easily and securely transfer digital information.
bGS: What products or services do you provide that are 'Green' and in what way do they help the environment or prevent harm?
Accellion: Accellion Green is a version of Accellion's managed file transfer solutions and is specifically designed for organizations that currently use traditional overnight courier vendors to ship time-sensitive information and want to reduce their impact on the environment. Accellion Green enables business users to send large digital files securely over the Internet eliminating the use of overnight deliveries of paper, CDs or thumb drives. It continuously tracks the digital delivery of information and the related pounds of CO2 saved. The information is displayed via a corporate dashboard to alert users to the positive impact they are having on the environment by simply choosing to send information through Accellion Green instead of a traditional physical delivery service.

bGS: What categories would you say your products or services encompass? Please delete those that do not apply, and leave the ones that do apply. Non-tangibles (Information, investments, marketing)
  • Energy production
  • Energy conservation
  • Water
  • Ecology (direct impact on plant or animal life)
  • Waste/toxin reduction
  • Land use

bGS: What scale and development stage are your products at?
Accellion: Accellion is already deployed by over 500 corporations worldwide with more than 1,000,000 business users. Accellion is used by both small and large organizations that span industries and the public and private sector.

With digital data growth on the rise, the quantity of files being transferred electronically is rapidly growing. Several of Accellion's largest corporate users are already using Accellion to transfer in excess of 2 Terabytes (TBs) per month of digital information. In addition to reduced CO2 emissions, for every 2 TBs of data transferred electronically there is an environmental savings of approximately 4000 CDs of data or 100,000 trees converted into paper and printed.

bGS: Would you say your company is involved in: product innovation

bGS: What have been your company's contributions to the field, or how do you help your clients be 'green'?
Accellion: Accellion Green has helped companies reduce both the financial and environmental cost of sending digital files. Instead of shipping digital files in an envelope that travels in a truck or via air to its destination, Accellion lets business users send large digital files instantaneously and securely. Accellion enables companies to reduce their carbon footprint by eliminating the environmentally costly practice of using overnight envelopes containing paper, CDs or thumb drives. While the CO2 produced for each envelope varies by package origination and destination, an overnight envelope produces on average 2.28lbs of CO2*.

bGS: What size do you estimate your total market, and your current share of that market?
Accellion: The total size of the managed file transfer market is estimated to be in excess of $7B. Accellion is one of the premier providers of managed file transfer solutions and is the industry leader in offering a Green managed file transfer solution that not only highlights the green benefits of digital delivery but also includes virtual technologies to reduce data center energy consumption.

bGS: Do you have any research papers or internal metrics that measure the environmental impact of your products/services? Can you provide links or copies?
Accellion: Accellion commissioned a report by Ryerson, Masterson & Associates to investigate the avoided GHG emissions associated with Accellion. The report estimated that the avoided CO2 emissions from an average overnight envelope were 2.28lbs CO2*.

bGS: What are the biggest challenges in your field?
Accellion: The biggest challenge is informing business users of the environmental cost of sending digital files via overnight courier and educating them on the environmentally friendly alternatives. Some companies have been quite aggressive about addressing this issue, many need educating.

bGS: The greatest opportunities?
Accellion: By switching to a managed file transfer solution such as Accellion’s, a corporation will immediately begin reducing CO2 emissions and paper consumption, while reducing costs and streamlining operations.

bGS: What advice would you offer to individuals or companies interested in the environment? Ie what is needed, how to get involved (either thru work or as a consumer) and how to focus effort the most effectively to help the environment?
Accellion: While technology is the root of much environmental damage, at Accellion we believe strongly that technology can also be a vehicle to reduce environmental impact. Technology that can be used to automate previously manual tasks offers great opportunities for reducing environmental impact. Accellion is such an example – by replacing the manual task of moving digital information via paper, CD or thumb drive via overnight envelope, Accellion is eliminating multiple steps, vehicles, and people from the process thereby reducing the environmental impact. There are many such examples of processes such as this which with an investment in technology can have tremendous environmental benefit.

* The amount of avoided CO2 emissions are estimates only, based on published information and emission factors, and should not be used for commercial purposes. This emission estimate assumes that this transfer avoided an overnight delivery of average distance by an aircraft within the United States. Actual avoided emissions associated with this file transfer could potentially be higher or lower, depending upon the size of individual file transfers and the geographic points of origin and destination associated with those transfers.
