bGS: What is the current focus of your company's business?
Avocent: Avocent hardware, software and embedded technologies combined provide customers with the power of centralized management of data centers and all devices in them. IT administrators can sit at a single console (PC) and control local and remote servers, network data center devices, and mobile, and manage power use, as well as track temperatures via probes and environmental appliances. Via its LANDesk group, the company offers centralized software for the management of power and other considerations across all the desktop PCs in any business. The net-net is that Avocent enables Green IT and makes management of today’s complex IT environment easier.

bGS: What products or services do you provide that are 'Green' and in what way do they help the environment or prevent harm?
Avocent: Avocent’s DSView 3 software, and intelligent power strips (called IPDUS) allow IT managers to view all power use in the data center (server room) and to make decisions based on this. Example: If servers are running inefficiently, or if there are several under-utilized servers, they can be consolidated, or virtual servers can be added to help reduce heat or power use.

bGS: What categories would you say your products or services encompass?
Avocent:
  • Non-tangibles (Information, investments, marketing)
  • Energy conservation
  • Waste/toxin reduction
bGS: What scale and development stage are your products at?
Avocent:  All of Avocent’s products for data center to (LANDesk) desktop power management are available now. Avocent is constantly innovating new solutions.

bGS: Would you say your company is involved in:
Avocent: product innovation

bGS: What have been your company's contributions to the field, or how do you help your clients be 'green'?
Avocent: Avocent helps customers be “green” with software tools that manage power use in data centers, and across the desktop PCs of companies. Also, new software helps to plan the design of new data centers so the companies using Avocent’s tools can predict efficiencies, projected costs and power usage ahead of time, and make changes BEFORE they build. Example: Data centers can be built near water sources in rural areas, but the IT workers can work in a nearby city (or anywhere) because remote management tools offered by Avocent allow them access and control from afar.

bGS: What size do you estimate your total market, and your current share of that market?
Avocent: Avocent is the clear sales leader in the IT Operations Management - KVM space (keyboard, video, mouse – devices that control remote management) and a leader in data center and power management and desktop management software (security, anti-virus, asset management).

bGS: Do you have any research papers or internal metrics that measure the environmental impact of your products/services? Can you provide links or copies?
Avocent: Whitepaper:  IT in Tough Economic Climates (covers better desktop to data center power and asset management)

bGS: What are the biggest challenges in your field?
Avocent: Helping companies understand that technology can be simpler and can provide savings – example – You start to do this simply by setting the baseline in energy use that you didn’t have before – so adjustments can be made and return on investment gains can be realized.

bGS: The greatest opportunities?
Avocent: Green IT as a global effort and the technologies such as virtualization (software based-servers instead of hardware) and cloud computing.

bGS: Are you interested in collaborations with other companies or individuals, and if so in what areas?
Avocent: Yes, in helping management heat, power and space uses in data centers.

bGS: What advice would you offer to individuals or companies interested in the environment? i.e. what is needed, how to get involved (either thru work or as a consumer) and how to focus effort the most effectively to help the environment?
Avocent: The advice we have is that it just takes a little knowledge to make huge changes. The Brevard County School District saved hundreds of thousands of dollars in power costs just going to an automated hibernate policy applied system-wide to PCs overnight. We can apply those policies with the Avocent LANDesk Management Suite.

Avocent: Please provide website and any other sales/contact information you would like posted.

Nice! Good to see that power savings can be achieved for multiple businesses with new power measurement technology by people like Avocent - I think the energy companies give rebates for this too - Avocent helps prove your "before and after" power use to get a rebate in the data center.
